We Are Delivering the Energy Transition Through Hydrogen and CCUS

CCUS & Hydrogen are essential to the net zero ambition, but real progress so far has been slow. Governments across Europe recognize that without rapid delivery at scale of CCUS and Hydrogen as part of the Energy Transition, a net zero target cannot be reached. We need to accelerate deployment at an industrial scale and close the gaps that are currently in the way.  This session will explore these gaps, what is being done already and how this enables a Net Zero future.

Mike Smith (Moderator)

NECCUS

Mike Smith is the CEO of NECCUS, the Scottish alliance for Industrial Decarbonisation. NECCUS has some 50 participating organizations across industry, academia, and development agencies. NECCUS is facilitating the development of the industrial scale CCUS and Hydrogen projects in Scotland, through advocacy, engagement, communication, and education. Supporting an effective transition to Net Zero through the deployment of CCUS, the production and use of hydrogen, and promoting clean industrial growth zones across the UK.

Mike has extensive leadership experience in the Energy sector. He has recently held senior leadership roles at INEOS and Orsted, with exposure to Oil & Gas and the Renewable industry. During over 10 years at Orsted, one of the world’s leading green companies and largest offshore wind developers, he participated in the journey of that company from a coal-fired energy provider and oil & gas producer to a leader in onshore/offshore windfarms and bioenergy.

Suzie Ferguson

Carbon Capture Technical Lead

Suzie is the Carbon Capture Technical Lead in Wood’s Specialist Engineering and Consulting team and has been working on CCS and decarbonization projects for 13 years.  She has worked on a number of the UK Government competition FEED projects, undertaken extensive benchmarking of different types of process plants with CO2 capture, from oil refineries to glass plants, and has evaluated many novel CO2 capture technologies on behalf of potential investors. Most recently Suzie has been working on the Humber Zero and Net Zero Teesside low carbon industrial cluster projects.  

Charlotte Hartley

Stakeholder and Communications Lead

Pale Blue Dot Energy

Charlotte joined Pale Blue Dot Energy (A Storegga Group Company) in 2016 and is currently a Stakeholder and Communications Lead for the Acorn CCS and Hydrogen Project. Charlotte is a Trustee of the Scottish youth-leadership charity 2050 Climate Group and represented the Group on the recently concluded Scottish Just Transition Commission and the IPPR Environmental Justice Commission. Both Commissions focused on the transition to a net-zero economy in a fair and sustainable way. In 2020, she was shortlisted for the Energy Institute Young Energy Professional of the Year Award

Martyn Tulloch

Head of Energy System Integration

A chartered engineer who has worked in both the oil & gas and renewable energy sectors over the last 20 years, Martyn has the privilege of leading a team that is passionate about ensuring that the oil and gas industry helps enable the transition to a low carbon future. He believes firmly that the skills, experience, and infrastructure established over the last four decades in NE Scotland and the wider UK oil and gas industry will have a pivotal role to play if we are to meet our net zero targets. The Energy System Integration team covers three industrial sectors that offer huge growth potential – offshore renewables, hydrogen and CCUS.
