Ecuador’s Vice minister for Mining talks through his own career challenges and how he got to his position in government following an unconventional journey in and out of the energy and mining sectors. He also explores his experiences working in Ecuador and how this compares to other regions. Fernando Benalcázar

Fernando Benalcázar has been Ecuador’s vice minister of mining since September 2018. He approaches his role with a vision of transparency and institutional efficiency, promoting the development of economically profitable, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable projects. Benalcázar has over 26 years of experience as a civil engineer in the national and international oil industry. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers in Ecuador. Benalcázar studied at the Universidad Católica del Ecuador, earned his degree in civil engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and holds a Certified Industrial Safety designation in the US.
