Challenges & Success of Digital Oilfield Implementation

Digital Oilfield is an Intelligent Energy concept that ensures a continuous optimization of an asset or group of assets through integration of standard tools, right people, defined business processes and appropriate facility or space. Digital oilfield solution includes real-time production optimization; it extends to reduction in an asset safety exposure and improvement in team integration.

Following over two decades of implementation by many operators globally, the digital oilfield is not new to the oil  and gas industry but has undergone a series of transformation in implementation and sustainability. The fundamental principle and objectives of the digital field implementation aims towards optimization of an asset in the short term and extending the life cycle value of an asset in long term -- but the difference remains the name each operator refers to this concept.

With world-class digital oilfield implementation by several major oil and gas operators’, short term solutions have  been delivered but the challenges have been value erosion overtime due to lack of effort or commitment to ensure solid embedment process and sustainability of the solutions. The challenges include but are not limited to the following:

  • Poor alignment of the project implementation objectives with the business need of the asset
  • Lack of involvement of the asset at the inception of the project; ensuring seamless ownership and sponsorship

To mitigate or manage these gaps, a sustainability framework based on personal industry experience will be shared, to ensure the digital field solutions address the asset-specific business need and the asset takes ownership and sponsorship of the project right from the project conception phase. Proper succession planning and a clear training path for personnel must be identified and captured in the sustainability framework. At the end of this webinar the following objectives will be achieved with reference to case study: Know the common challenges of Digital Oil implementation; Provide mitigations on identified DOF Implementation challenges; Map sustainability model in DOF embedment process; Manage World-Class DOF projects.

Mr. Udofia is a seasoned Petroleum Engineering Consultant with over 21years-diversified experience in the oil and gas industry with specialty in: Operation Integration (Digital Oilfield Implementation); Collaborative Work Environment Sustainability;  Production Metering / Allocation / Planning / Well Testing / Facility Maintenance; Petroleum Production Engineering Consultancy & Oil/Gas Field Operations; Asset and Project Management.

Mr. Udofia is Technical Director of Suneses Energy; he currently supports oil and gas operators as Petroleum Engineering Consultant and formulation of new technology road map in implementation of DOF.  Previous work experiences include: Geoservices, ConocoPhillips, Addax Petroleum and Shell.  During these years, he has lectured part-time at University level and has a sound track record in digital oilfield (DOF) implementation as well as successfully implemented and embedded Smart Fields and Collaborative Work Environment projects across assets in Shell.

Emmanuel has facilitated workshops, published, authored and presented several technical papers including SPE technical papers in major oil and gas conferences in many countries with great focus on DOF. Besides his engineering qualifications Master’s & Bachelor’s degrees in Petroleum Engineering from University of Port Harcourt - Nigeria, he holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from University of Leicester- United Kingdom.
