Intelligent Completions are playing a significant role in transforming the core of upstream Oil & Gas industry. Data driven components in Intelligent Completions are shaping reservoir optimization and management strategies. In this webinar, we will discuss a case study on the application of Intelligent Completions in Enhanced Oil Recovery in a mature field in Colombia. The focus of the webinar will be on the role of an all-electric intelligent completion with electric valves and distributed fiber optic acoustic sensors. We will share the key decision criteria for well selection, intelligent completions over conventional completions and technology selection. Results of implementing Intelligent Completion and future plans to expand the program to additional wells will also be shared. This case study demonstrates the technological advancements seen in the domain of Intelligent Completions and its potential to revolutionize Enhanced Oil Recovery in mature fields.

Walter Sanchez

Walter Sanchez is a Completion Engineer working for the Technology and Optimization Group of the Colombian National Oil company (Ecopetrol). He has over 12 years of experience in the Oil&Gas industry in different segments including: well completion, sand control, hydraulic fracturing and stimulation, and enhanced oil recovery. He joined Ecopetrol in 2017 and led the implementation of the first All-Electric intelligent completion with permanent fiber optic for an injector well installed in 2019. Currently he is in charge of the expansion of this technology in the company which includes 6 additional wells in 2022 He is also part of the team supporting the corporate decarbonization strategy to reach NetZero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Walter has a master's degree in Management and Development Practice from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia and has worked as a consultant for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Dr. Paul Joseph (Moderator)

Dr. Paul Joseph is a Program Manager in Intelligent Production Systems at the Center for Technology Innovation of Baker Hughes in Houston, TX. Prior to joining Baker Hughes, he worked as a Product Development Engineer at Sercel Inc and Payload System Engineer at Lockheed Martin Corp in Houston. Paul has over 25 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry. His professional interests include technology innovation, research and development, engineering and field operations, intelligent completions, enhanced oil recovery and production optimization. Paul has a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University, AL.

Indira Saripally (Moderator)

Indira Saripally is a Reservoir Engineer Advisor at Occidental Oil & Gas Co.(Oxy) with over 13 years of experience in the industry. She has worked in many roles in the Reservoir Engineering domain – from reservoir management, to international business development, as well as specialized technical roles such as simulation modeling in fields with secondary and tertiary recovery mechanisms. She has worked in both US-domestic energy sector, and in the Middle East. She is presently based in Houston. In her current role she manages fields in the Gulf of Mexico. Indira’s technical interests include reservoir surveillance and mature fields development.     

Indira has Masters degree in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University. She has been actively involved with regional SPE chapters since 2005. She is currently a technical reviewer for SPE Peer-Reviewed Journal. She is also the Associate Technical Editor of the SPE publication, ‘The Way Ahead’.
