Minimizing Risk through Gravel Pack Design Workflow

Sand production is a worldwide problem that results in billions of dollars of losses due to delayed/lost production and workover costs. Various techniques are available to control sand production, but gravel packing is recognized as one of the most reliable, so long as a complete pack is achieved in the annulus around the screens.
However, as gravel pack applications extend to more challenging environments, including longer intervals and deep water, higher pressures and tighter pore/frac pressure windows are increasing the risk of bridging and making it more difficult to achieve complete packs. Placement technique selection and treatment design are therefore more critical than ever, the key to which lies in the ability to accurately model downhole process to fully understand the potential risks, identify their mitigation measures and assess the benefits of applying the latest technology. Ultimately, optimal technique selection is a balance between cost and perceived risk for any given well. This presentation gives an overview of the various sand control techniques before discussing gravel packing in more detail, enabling the audience to better understand the placement techniques and their respective pros, cons and application windows. Real-life examples are used to highlight the importance of modelling in the proper planning and execution of such treatments, providing the audience with a systematic workflow for gravel pack placement technique selection that can be used to minimize placement risk and maximize the likelihood of treatment success.

Mr. Jain is a Sand Control Consultant based in Asia with DuneFront and has over 15 years of experience in the field of sand control. Prior to joining DuneFront, he worked for Schlumberger in various positions worldwide including field operations, product development and business development roles in sand control and stimulation related services. He now works on the design and evaluation of sand control treatments globally and also delivers basic and advanced training courses on sand control. Samyak is an active member of SPE, having served on the technical committee of several SPE conferences and has authored numerous presentations, technical papers and patents in the fields of well completions and well stimulation. He received a Master’s in Petroleum Engineering (M.S.) from University of Oklahoma.
