Monitor, Automate and Optimize ESP Operations Using Advanced Process Control (APC)

With the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology and IR4.0, digital information is becoming more integrated into our daily operations. Such a modality of operation allows all disciplines in an organization to collaboratively manage and operate their assets to achieve the maximum value.
In this webinar, we describe one of the initiatives under Saudi Aramco’s digital transformation strategy. It is a simple yet innovative application of Advanced Process Control (APC) that facilitates continuous optimization of the performance of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP), to not only comply with the assigned production targets, but also to automatically meet the operational constraints. The successful implementation of this technology on multiple oil wells in an onshore oilfield has demonstrated significant power savings of 10% to 20%, and is expected to minimize premature failures and extend pump life.
Mr. Patel began his career in 1992 as an Instrumentation & Control Engineer before getting involved in Advanced Process Control and Optimization (APC) in upstream, downstream and petrochemical processes.
He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Control Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, India. He has worked in a number of countries including India, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the USA during his twenty plus year career in APC.
Mr. Patel holds a patent related to oil processing in unconventional oilfield and has filed another patent related to oil processing in conventional oilfields. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) in Canada, and the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) in Saudi Arabia. Kalpesh is also certified as an Automation Professional (CAP) by the International Society of Automation in the USA.
