Tech Talks: How to Reduce Carbon Footprint in Well Construction
CemFIT Heal is a transition technology that minimizes well construction CO2 footprint as it had less CO2e embedded during the manufacturing process compared to traditional cement systems. In this SPE Tech Talk, Schlumberger's Saurabh Kapoor and Bipin Jain will discuss how technology is thus helping with the reduction of Scope 3 emissions.
Constructing wells with long-term zonal isolation would lower the probability of any unintended intervention needed during the production till abandonment thus lowering the associated carbon footprint. The pair will talk about how CemFIT Heal flexible self-healing cement system supports the reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by ensuring well integrity from drilling to abandonment, providing a competent annular pressure seal and protecting against hydrocarbon leaks and sustained casing pressure (SCP) at the wellhead.
With conventional cement, a cement sheath failure such as a crack or microannulus results in a hydrocarbon leak or SCP at the wellhead. The CemFIT Heal system is the only cement system in the industry that not only withstands wellbore stresses due to flexibility in the system but, should any isolation defects appear, repairs itself on contact with oil or gas irrespective of methane content.

Saurabh Kapoor is the Global Product Champion for Cementing and based in Houston, Schlumberger USA. He has over 15 years of experience in providing consultation on the well construction and long term well integrity. He has been involved in the successful construction of the challenging High-Pressure High-Temperature wells, Unconventional Gas wells and Extended Reach Wells around the world. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati and an MBA from Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. He has achieved expert status and recognition for demonstrating superior technical contributions and business acumen in the Oil and Gas Industry.
Bipin Jain is currently Global Technical Director for Cementing and based in France. He started his career in Schlumberger as field engineer and for the last 31 years has worked in operations, Technical support, Product development in Research Centre, Technology Hub, and many key HQ positions. For his expertise in providing well integrity solutions and interpretation in various challenging environments of Deep Water, HPHT, Flow hazards, shallow flows, he is recognized as an Advisor in Schlumberger Technical community and holds multiple patents. He did his Bachelors of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. He has been actively involved with SPE for many years and organized applied technology workshops, conferences, and customer training.
